On Tuesday, the prospects for arguably the most coveted awards in the music industry were announced. The 2018 Grammy nominees were announced and people everywhere were surprised. Most notably: Childish Gambino, Kendrick Lamar, Jay Z, Lorde, and Bruno Mars were nominated for album of the year, “Despacito”, “4:44”, “1-800-273-8255”, “That’s What I Like”, and "Issues" were nominated for song of the year, and Alessia Cara, Khalid, Lil Uzi Vert, Julia Michaels, and SZA were nominated for best new artist. News outlets like the LA times celebrated the refreshing diversity of the nominees this year with their headline "How the Recording Academy has evolved toward relevance with the 2018 Grammy nominations". The article describes how the music industry has "embraced" the hip hop urban genre as compared to recent years. It also uses the word "recognized" when referring to the minority artists who were nominated. For the first time in 50 years, a white male is not among one of the nominees of the Album of the Year (Lorde herself is the only Caucasian). On the other hand, the Rolling Stones article discusses the many artists who were "snubbed" (like Ed Sheeran, Katy Perry, and Taylor Swift). The author of this article wrote that "Pop Suffered", implying that Sheeran, Perry and Swift among others more deserved nominations. Finally, the article also descried Jay Z's nominations as "a rare opportunity for a hip-hop beat-maker". All of this vocabulary chosen implies opinionated injustices in the nominations.
